the snow banks, half melted then frozen anew,
form spikes and edges that cut me straight through
they line the roads that form that harsh gauntlet
those perilous rides that drag me past your apartment
and I'll try not to look or imagine who's there
block my ears to the affection and devotion you swear
to somebody new in the same rooms of old
where I recklessly left the pure part of my soul
I construct a scenario where I run to your floor
all 15 flights then kick down the door
where I'll find you there with your easy recourse
rip open my chest and say, "just take what's yours"
just take what's yours
just take what's yours, it does me no good
it makes me spend on things that I know I shouldn't
things to forget and things to cheer up
things to just make me not give a fuck
about the future we planned and the incongruous now
or the new future you're building where I'm not allowed
the 26
the knife twists

the hum is a lullaby
Toronto gives me a nice pollution high
through the smog I can see your signal lights
you're going left, I'm going right
so wake up and shake off the dust
with your silent conviction to burn through the bust
and I'm holding you to it, you said that you would
and I want to believe you but I'm touching wood
I'm working so hard to find out who you are
but I only find out who I'm not
and I keep telling myself to remember it well
there's a wealth in the things I forgot
it seems that I've lost this albatross
any minute I'm going to float away
but I know that it's in me, just buried so deeply
that it can't see the light of day
but that's going to change

it's all flowers and heart-shaped boxes
but there's nothing inside
it's all metaphor in lock step
with sound and fury as the guide
it's not keeping you from reaching
those self-important heights
just start saying what you're meaning
then there's nowhere to hide
a simple rhyme informs the season
so don't over write
because wanting it too much could be why
you'll wait all your life
for that second try
you're mining conversations
for clever turns of phrase
treating experience like a resource
just hoping for a few plays
but it's the simple thoughts that always move you
so don't twist and writhe
for some axiom to fit to meter
just say what's on your mind
you've been sad for a long time
but that's alright
you'll get that second try
just say what's on your mind
